London Fashion Week is recognized as one of the “Big Four” fashion weeks, a largely followed premier global event that is an essential setting for emerging designers. Each year London hosts their fashion week biannually for over 250 designers that bridges the gap between innovation, culture, technology and sustainability.

Sustainable History of London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week is a global environmental fashion leader through their strict, mandatory sustainability standards. Since it’s Autumn/Winter 2026 season LFW adopted Copenhagen Fashion Week’s Sustainability Requirements Framework.

Ethical and Eco-standards for brands and designers today include:

  • Requiring 60% of collections to be made from certified, deadstock or recycled materials

  • Brands cannot destroy unsold clothing

  • Must educate and inform customers about sustainability practices across at least two platforms

  • Brands cannot use single props or plastic packaging

  • Presenting companies must have Diversity & Inclusion Policies for Hiring

Brief Timeline of LFW’s Sustainable History:

1993: The NEWGEN cohort was formalized in 1993 as an initiative to support emerging talent. It’s focus on sustainability, upcycling, and ethical practices as standards for NEWGEN designers recently started in 2025 with full implementation set for January 2026 (see above requirements). The program is known for launching the careers of young designers including iconic names such as Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney.

September 2006: Estethica, a showcase for sustainable and ethical designers was adopted by London Fashion Week through the British Fashion Council.

2010: LFW’s first dedicated sustainable runway show took place at St. James’ Palace featuring designers from the Estethica program to promote green practices.

Chloe Kerman, Fashion Editor of TANK Magazine + BFC Appointed Stylist and Creative Consultant for the Show quoted:

“I am really looking forward to being involved with this exciting new project. Sustainable fashion is very much in a transition.

As people begin to consider their social responsibility as consumers, designers are really starting to consider to this philosophy as part of their process.

The range of creative talent showcased here just goes to show how stunning ethical clothing can be, in the end it has to be about great design and beautiful clothing.

Supermodel Erin O’Conner who walked the 2006 Sustainable Runway told BCF ahead of the show:

Merging style and conscience has never been so important and valued at London Fashion Week. I'm proud to walk the catwalk for designers who have crafted their talent and considered the true ethical values in the creative design process’.

2018: LFW became the first major fashion week to ban fur, excluding the usage of exotic animal skins to take a proactive stance on ethical fashion. They further mandated circular design while enforcing strict sustainability requirements across low impact production, and championing the use of recycled or regenerated materials.

Today, major British luxury houses such as Burberry have committed to carbon-neutral runway shows, with broader company-scale goals aiming to set a net-zero benchmark for the industry.

Fashion this season has brought forth looks that significantly rely on texture and movement. Between the above jacket and Looks 8, 11, 32, 34 and beyond within this collection remind me of Louise Trotter’s Bottega Veneta skirts and jackets composed of fiberglass that creates powerful momentum through movement.

The Erdem Fall/Winter 2026 collection significantly marked the brand’s 20th anniversary with a theme of “The Imaginary Conversation” - combining historical references such as 19th-century panniered skirts, contemporary Elizabethan collars and referencing historical figures such as opera singer Maria Callas, writer Radclyffe Hall, and designer muse Debo the Duchess of Devonshire.

Overall the collection is described as a “remix” of archival, romantic designs with modern functionality. Key materials used included rich textures of tinsel, fringe and crystal embellishments; intricate and raw patchwork incorporating distressed tweeds; and signature fabrics of floral, jacquard, silks, and delicate lace to create sculptural shapes.

Personally, every single look from this collection had me in awe. For a ready to wear collection it brings forth drama, bold prints, and extreme shape play in a very artistic manner.

The collection’s theme “The Aviary,” was inspired by flight and freedom, driven by a theatrical and romantic narrative. Designs were gender fluid with dramatic, architectural and exaggerated shapes. Signature waist-cinching corsets, broad shoulders, and slinky slip dresses were featured across the collection.

Looks were adorned with feathers, fringe, and large satin bows. Primary colors mixed obsidian black with highlights of lilac, chartreuse, and animal prints.
